Pope Francis on Feb. 14: "Old Mass? Just a
kind of fashion!"
Yesterday (Friday, Feb. 14), Pope
Francis held an audience with the Bishops of
the Czech Republic who came to Rome for their ad limina visit.
[Abp. Jan Graubner speaks:]
When we were discussing those who are fond of the ancient liturgy and wish to
return to it, it was evident that the Pope speaks with great affection,
attention, and sensitivity for all in order not to hurt anyone. However, he
made a quite strong statement when he said that he understands when the old
generation returns to what it experienced, but that he cannot understand the
younger generation wishing to return to it. "When I search more
thoroughly - the Pope said - I find that it is rather a kind of fashion
[in Czech: 'móda', Italian 'moda'].
And if it is a fashion, therefore it is a matter that does not need that much
attention. It is just necessary to show some patience and kindness to people
who are addicted to a certain fashion. But I consider greatly important to go
deep into things, because if we do not go deep, no liturgical form, this or
that one, can save us."

Indeed, it is a liturgical fashion that has endured for well over the 1500 years which was the point when it was codified papally for the first time by Pope St Gregory The Great. However, we know that by the end of the 1st century most of its major elements were in place according to Fr Adrian Fortesque.
ReplyDeleteThis papacy is as ignoranrt as they come and semi-literate as a catholic since he knows no Latin. What a disgrace!
Certainly, the Novus Ordo is a vernacular trend that was roundly condemned by the Trent Councils and Pope St Pius V - they anathematised such a liturgical device as they knew it was protestant and divisive. This is what it has done to the church now - it has subverted the true Catholic form of liturgical devotion for a design which is routinely abused and often sacrilegious in its staging of the Communion of the congregation. There you are, Holy Father, that is a kind of fashion but you apparently have lost your proper liturgical compass alongside your papal predecessors since 1969. Since 1965 we have lost tens of thousands of presbyters; had over a thousand churches and chapels close; seminaries disappear next to religious houses - monasteries and convents; Catholic schools have vanished by the hundreds while we have had the shame of endless sexual perversion and financial scandals at the very heart of the church hierarchy and clergy, Looks like we need that old Latin Mass "fashion" back to put the Roman back in Catholic and the discipline and correct doctrine restored to a church once described by Pope John XXIII as strong and robust before the conciliar nonsense began.
ReplyDeleteWe as catholics need to observe the faith as it was pre-1951.Second we need the new invalid Sacraments outlawed. The novus ordo hasn't had valid holy orders since April 1969.Pius XII was the first novus ordo pope with his destruction of Holy Week, the after midnight fast, vernacular in the liturgy, (yes look up what he allowed in China & Germany),and lay lectors reading the epistle.Other than that Leon, you are correct.
