I don't want to ruin the movie for you, but he is not an obedient priest in that he does not strictly follow the rules for exorcisms, and that is why he gets into all the trouble that he does get in. Real exorcists have no life for themselves. It's very ugly, and scary, and one might say that it seems petty, trivial. But it's not trivial. So much beauty and new life and transformation comes in the wake of a successful exorcism that it is astounding how one little devil can hold down so much, preventing entire cities, and states to dwell in darkness and dismay.<br />Exorcism is important. But my archbishop (whose permission is now needed to perform an exorcism, and only priests are allowed) will not even ACCEPT a request for an exorcism. The Pope had told all bishops to be sure to have an appointed exorcist. So how is this obedience to the Pope? How many bishops have really obeyed and have functioning exorcists in their diocese?
